Horse Rehabilitation Planning Individualized CareGiven survival instincts, a horse compensates during times of disability by hiding signs of weakness. A successful therapeutic plan addresses the total horse, while avoiding looking at specific injury with Tunnel Vision. Influencing factors for rehabilitation include:
Here we offer our time to make your horse's recovery plan a priority. Access to rehab equipment, trained expertise and facilities designed for recovery in a horse healthy environment are available at Double T Farm. Beth A. Taylor, a DVM and Certified Equine Rehabilitation Practitioner, wants to help your partners meet their potential. Therapeutic plans are coordinated in cooperation with owner, trainer, farrier, equine veterinarian and equine therapist. |
Professional experience has shown that the earlier
equine therapy is begun, the more favorable the outcome
The equine therapist helps to localize imbalances that may have occurred from overwork, poorly-fitted tack, unbalanced riding, incorrect foot balance, poor conformation, or other stressful and chronic conditions. Muscle trauma can occur in any horse at any time, similar to the human athlete. It is important to keep muscles and joints limber and pain free in order to rectify initial muscle trauma and to prevent further cumulative strain injuries from occurring. Regular massage and a disciplined warm-up routine will help to minimize wear and tear on the joints, tendons and ligaments, and this results in a longer, healthier work life for your horse.
Regular therapeutic sessions allow us to feel and detect cumulative muscle problems much sooner than they would be shown, otherwise. As stated earlier, horses may otherwise compensate or tend to hide their symptoms of pain. Horse therapeutic sessions can be used in the direct treatment of damaged muscles and for preventative purposes. Acupressure techniques and massage have been found to increase circulation and the supply of nutrients to the muscles, relax the nervous system from stress and help remove toxins, all of which helps during recovery from injuries.
Electrical Stimulation therapy (E-Stim) effects pain relief through natural body pathways, reducing the need for drugs. E-Stim promotes increased circulation and healing. With low-level usage of Electrical Stimulation, tissue fluid build-up (Edema) can be gently pulsed away from the injury - OR - With stronger dosed muscle contractions, muscles can be re-mobilized and nerves influenced after muscle atrophy. E-Stim has been used at acupuncture points and sites of inflammation for better healing. Electrodes are applied to deliver intermittent stimulation to surface nerves in order to block pain while helping to release endorphins which are naturally occurring pain killers. Both, non-invasive and non-addictive, medical research has shown that electrical stimulation is extremely beneficial to recovery, and there are no limiting side effects when properly applied.
A combination of cold therapy techniques are employed to help heal while providing pain relief. Cold therapy benefits the acutely damaged tissue through a decrease in metabolic activity, lower inflammatory reaction, slower bleeding, and provides pain relief.
